Why AI Recommends Your Competitors Instead of You
If ChatGPT doesn’t recommend your business, it is usually because the AI can’t clearly tell what you do, can’t find enough independent evidence that you are a good choice, or can’t access your content, while your competitors are clearer, more widely mentioned and easier to cite. Each of these causes can be fixed.
AI recommends what it can confidently explain
An AI assistant answering “what’s the best option for X?” is trying to give a safe, useful answer. It leans towards businesses it can describe with confidence and that other sources back up. If a competitor is easier to describe and more often mentioned, the assistant will tend to name them, even if your product is better.
The most common reasons, and how to fix them
1. Your website doesn’t say clearly what you do
Clever taglines, vague copy (“we empower growth”) or key facts buried deep in the site make it hard for AI to match you to a question.
Fix: state what you offer, for whom and where, in plain language at the top of your homepage and in your page titles. Give each main product or service its own page.
2. You don’t answer the questions customers ask
Competitors with FAQs, comparison pages and guides give AI ready-made answers to quote. If your site only has a homepage and a contact form, there is little to work with.
Fix: list the questions people ask before buying and answer each one directly on your site.
3. Too few independent mentions
AI looks beyond your own claims. Reviews, directories, app store listings, “best of” articles, press and forum discussions are evidence. A competitor mentioned in many of these places looks like the safer recommendation.
Fix: ask customers for reviews, get listed where your industry is compared, and take part honestly in communities where your product is a genuine answer.
4. AI crawlers can’t read your site
If robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, or your content only appears after heavy JavaScript runs, assistants that browse the web may not see it.
Fix: allow crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, keep key text in the HTML, and keep your sitemap current.
5. Inconsistent or outdated information
Different names, old prices or conflicting descriptions across your site and listings reduce an assistant’s confidence, or lead it to describe you wrongly.
Fix: audit how you are described everywhere and make it consistent and current.
6. You are positioned too broadly
“For everyone” loses to “for exactly this”. Assistants match specific needs to specific businesses.
Fix: name your niche, audiences, locations and use cases explicitly, and create pages for each.
7. You are new
Models learn from what has been published over time. A new business has less written about it, so it can take a while to be picked up.
Fix: focus on what assistants can retrieve live: clear pages, crawlability and fresh third-party mentions.
What not to do
- Don’t copy your competitor’s pages. Duplicate content doesn’t make you more recommendable. Explain what is genuinely different about you.
- Don’t buy fake reviews or links. They risk penalties from platforms and lose customer trust, and they don’t build the kind of reputation assistants rely on.
- Don’t assume one answer is final. AI answers vary between assistants, phrasings and over time. Look at patterns across many questions.
- Don’t try to fix everything at once. Start with the questions closest to a purchase and the gaps that show up most often.
The aim isn’t to trick AI into naming you. It’s to make the case for you as clear and well supported as the case for your competitors, so that recommending you becomes the obvious, safe answer.
How to find out which reason applies to you
Ask the assistants the buying questions your customers ask, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok and Claude. Note who is recommended, what is said about them and which sources are cited. Then compare their websites and mentions with yours; the gap usually points to the fix. The free AISeesYou report does this for you and shows where you are mentioned, who is recommended instead, and 3 fixes to get picked.
It can change
Being overlooked today isn’t permanent. AISeesYou’s founder saw ChatGPT start recommending his alarm app, Awaken, after he optimized it for AI search; 26% of Awaken’s users came from ChatGPT and other AI, for free.
FAQ
